Promote frontier science in basic education and expand young people’s access to scientific careers.
Pioneer Science is an initiative of the Instituto D’Or de Pesquisa e Ensino (IDOR) to support training, development, and the attraction of talent to produce frontier science in Brazil. Independent and non-profit, the initiative aims to invest R$ 500 million over ten years in promising and underexplored lines of research at the interface between biomedical and health sciences and the exact sciences.
The mission of Pioneer Science is to contribute to the development of frontier science in Brazil by driving underexplored and potentially promising fields, especially at the interfaces between biomedical sciences and the exact sciences.
Invest in research with disruptive potential for human health and well-being, supporting scientists with an innovative spirit to pursue bold scientific questions and creating state-of-the-art infrastructure.
Promote frontier science through engagement with multiple sectors of society, including the public, private, and philanthropic sectors, as well as through science communication.

The areas of interest of Pioneer Science lie at the interfaces between the biomedical and health sciences and the exact sciences—this includes projects in three major fields: molecular and cellular biology, the physics and mathematics of biology, and neuroscience and cognition.
Pioneer Science supports programs with strong potential to transform both science and society. We identify and develop promising and still underexplored research areas with the potential to generate significant advances.
On the other end of the spectrum, Pioneer Science believes that new generations of scientists will be stronger as educational inequalities decrease. For this reason, it encourages elementary and high school students from public schools to deepen their studies, while also showing them that a scientific career can be an excellent professional choice. Pioneer Science’s education support initiatives are carried out through its own programs and through partnerships with well-established institutions focused on the education sector.
Each year, Pioneer Science renews its commitment to frontier science and transformative education. Our 2021–2024 Activity Report presents the key milestones of this journey: strategic partnerships, disruptive research, direct support for young talent, and initiatives that strengthen cutting-edge scientific production in Brazil. By documenting achievements and lessons learned, the report also outlines the paths we are charting for the future. Click below to access the full report and discover this story in the making.
