Carmem Gilardoni

Sobre

C-I Researcher at the Brazilian Center for Research in Physics (CBPF), a research unit based in Rio de Janeiro under Brazil’s Ministry of Science, Technology and Innovation, where she conducts research focused on interactions between photons and quantum systems in materials.

Áreas de Pesquisa:

Physics and Mathematics of Biology

About the research:

Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) is widely used in medicine, but suffers from specific challenges related to high operational costs and limited spatial resolution. Quantum sensors, in particular those based on electronic defects in solids such as nitrogen-vacancy (NV) centers in diamond, offer promising solutions. These sensors enable the detection of magnetic fields, temperature, and pressure at the nanometer scale, operating at room temperature and in biological conditions. This project proposes the development of devices that integrate NV centers with microfluidic channels, nanodiamonds, and optical fibers, aiming to optimize sensor sensitivity and evaluate their applicability in biological systems, with the goal of detecting ionic currents and specific nuclear-spin species, opening new perspectives for in vivo and in vitro imaging.
