About the A+ Program and Instituto Apontar
By strengthening bonds, Instituto Apontar works with children and adolescents with traits of high abilities/giftedness and low income to guarantee their basic social rights to education and culture.
The institute identifies, selects and supports students with high-ability traits from grades 6 to 9 in the A+ Program, built on academic, social-emotional, and cultural pillars.
Instituto Apontar’s mission is to contribute to the development of the young participants of the programs, enabling them to become agents of transformation for their own lives, their families, and their surroundings.
Participating students are supported by a psychologist, a social worker, an administrative assistant, cultural activators, and the Instituto Apontar leadership team. After school, they take part in supplementary and complementary activities in Portuguese, mathematics, English, technology, life projects, and discovery projects. They also participate in cultural activities such as outings, workshops, hands-on sessions, and talks, expanding their cultural repertoire.
"I've been at Instituto Apontar for four years. Over the years, we do a lot. I believe these extra activities go beyond what we see in school. Everything I've done here helped me not only develop as a person but also discover what I want for my future. I discovered I really like helping people and I love science, and by combining the two, I want to pursue something related to medicine or biomedicine. This became stronger because the institute gave us outings, visits to clinics — such as IDOR — where we connected with people already working in these fields, and knowing more, I found something I'm deeply interested in and want to pursue in my future.
