About Science S-Week
Science education can inspire new ways of learning, thinking, and acting. In partnership with Instituto Apontar and Ciência Sob Tendas, Science S-Week was created to broaden the reach of science and strengthen its transformative role in the education of low-income young people in Rio de Janeiro.
Science S-Week is part of a broader proposal based on the STEAM methodology (Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, and Mathematics). The approach fosters active, creative, and collaborative learning through interdisciplinary challenges and hands-on experiences.
Science S-Week comprises three days of activities. The first two days are for a group of high-ability students selected by Instituto Apontar; on the last day, the program opens its doors to the entire school community. The goal is to spark curiosity, critical thinking, and direct contact with the scientific method.
During the first two after-school days, students dive into scientific experiments and workshops led by Ciência Sob Tendas mediators. On the final day, they take the lead: alongside the mediators, they present what they learned to other students in a peer-to-peer format where everyone experiments, discovers, and learns together.

"It was really cool and really important for us to have access to this information. The topic was optics, and since I have astigmatism and myopia, it's important to know what lenses are for and how everything works — carrying this knowledge into life itself. In school we learn theory, we don't really learn about vision. Here we're learning how we see, hands-on, and it's important to know how we see the world."
