Sobre

Biologist from Universidade Federal Fluminense (UFF), where he also completed his master’s and PhD in Neuroscience. He is currently a researcher and professor at Instituto D’Or de Pesquisa e Ensino (IDOR). His research uses the nematode Caenorhabditis elegans as an in vivo model to investigate neurobiological mechanisms related to aging and neurodegenerative diseases, integrating genetic, pharmacological, and behavioral approaches. In recent years, he has been dedicated to understanding how psychedelics modulate neural circuits, cellular stress, and phenotypes of neurodegeneration and longevity in C. elegans, seeking to map signaling pathways and molecular targets associated with neuroprotection.

About the research:

Investigates how psychedelic substances can influence protective mechanisms of the nervous system and processes associated with aging. To this end, we use the nematode C. elegans, a simple and widely established model in biology, which allows us to track effects on cellular health, stress resistance, behavior, and changes related to the accumulation of misfolded proteins — a phenomenon associated with neurodegenerative diseases. The goal is to identify which cellular pathways are activated by these compounds, offering potential input for the future development of therapeutic strategies. In parallel, two additional frontier-science fronts are explored: assessing how “non-classical” light interacts with biological systems and investigating whether C. elegans can help probe these questions.
