He graduated in Medicine from the Federal University of Rio de Janeiro and completed his medical residency in Neurology at the same university. He holds a doctorate in Sciences from the University of São Paulo. He specialized in cognitive neuroscience, with a postdoctoral fellowship at the Cognitive Neuroscience Section, NINDS, National Institutes of Health, USA. His research focuses on the areas of moral behavior and cognition, neuroscience and psychology of prosocial and antisocial behavior, values, and affiliative emotions. He is a member of the Life Sciences Council at Stanford University. He was an affiliated member of the Brazilian Academy of Sciences and is a co-founder and member of the board of directors of the D’Or Institute for Research and Education (IDOR).
