Biological Sciences graduate from UFMG and PhD in Genetics from UFRJ. He completed a postdoctoral fellowship in Microbiology and Immunology at the University of California, San Francisco (UCSF). He is currently a professor in the Department of Genetics, Ecology and Evolution at UFMG, with studies on HIV, HCV, SIV, dengue, chikungunya, oropouche, zika, yellow fever, and COVID-19.
